Theme of the Conference
Livestock and its products are critically important component of the food system, as indicated by increase in per capita demand for animal origin foods by 40 kg/person/year over the last 25 years. Sustainable animal production aims at for development of strategies for effective and efficient system of livestock rearing thereby resulting in either positive or neutral impact on the socio-economic and environmental outcomes. To achieve these goals manipulation of production practices offers a viable solution to enhance sustainability that can improve animal productivity as well as mitigate the ecological impacts of animal production. Sustainable meat processing depends on the seamless conversion of an animal into a quality, nutritious and safe food for human consumption. To achieve sustainability in production and processing of foods of animal origin a holistic approach in terms of field based research towards improvements of livelihoods of rural farmers need to be encouraged. In addition, the changing climate scenario, issues related to animal-human welfare and environmental protection are paramount to sustainability and must be at the epicentre of any consideration of animal production and processing of meat. This theme of the conference has been envisaged with an idea to have deliberations regarding the various technologies that can be employed in animal production system and processing of livestock products thereby ensuring safety and sustainability for both the producers and consumers in the long run.
